As President and Chief Executive Officer of Safeguard, Peter J. Boni draws on more than 25 years of experience as the CEO of technology companies in all stages of growth, and as an operating partner with a large global private equity firm. With both the deal savvy and operating expertise that a successful career affords, Peter is responsible for developing and executing Safeguard's corporate strategy. His goal is to build on the company's legacy of identifying businesses in the Technology and Life Sciences sectors with superior growth potential, and applying Safeguard's capital and strategic, operational and management resources to enhance long-term value for shareholders, portfolio companies and employees.
Peter is recognized as a leader in both building businesses and restoring troubled companies to growth and profitability. In addition to acting as CEO for several publicly-traded and privately-held companies, he has served as a chairman, a Fortune 500 corporate executive, a NYSE Fortune 1000 president, a management consultant, board member, investor and advisor to institutional investors in both early- and later-stage hardware, software and technology-enabled services firms. After his CEO experience, Peter served as an Operating Partner at Advent International, a leading global private equity firm managing $10 billion.
Under Peter's stewardship, several noteworthy firms were funded, grown and positioned for liquidity at premiums. Others were recognized among the Inc. 500 as fastest growing private companies. Several were brought to IPO. Some acquired and integrated with the acquired businesses, and/or were themselves acquired by industry leaders such as Computer Associates and Cisco Systems. As Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Steve leverages more than 25 years of strategic, financial and operational experience in raising capital and providing financial oversight, which greatly benefits Safeguard's shareholders and partner companies. During the course of his career, Steve has demonstrated an ability to successfully grow and manage entrepreneurial enterprises.
As Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Steve is responsible for all financial and administrative matters for Safeguard. He is also directly involved in providing oversight and support to Safeguard's partner companies, as well as participating in the development of Safeguard's long-term business strategy.
Steve has the necessary public company skills that will ultimately drive value in Safeguard and its partner companies. Steve is responsible for analyzing and helping to identify the value-add that each partner company brings to Safeguard and its shareholders. Steve's experience complements Safeguard's rich history and ensures a strong, disciplined financial infrastructure which drives excellence and accountability. Steve served as the interim Chief Financial Officer of Safeguard from December 2006 to June 2007.
Prior to joining Safeguard, Steve held a number of financial and operating roles in both venture-backed and publicly traded companies. Today, in addition to his responsibilities at Safeguard, he is also the non-executive Chairman of the Penn Valley Group, a middle-market management advisory firm which launched in 2005. Prior to the creation of the Penn Valley Group, Steve served as the Chief Financial Officer of Fiberlink Communications Corp., a leading provider of remote access VPN solutions for large enterprises. Steve's prior experience includes serving both as the Chief Financial Officer and then Chief Executive Officer of US Interactive, Inc. where he led the company's initial and secondary public offerings. Steve also served as Chief Executive Officer of Concellera Software, Inc., orchestrating the sale of its proprietary technology to Hewlett Packard, and spent over a decade with Deloitte & Touche, where he was responsible for developing an emerging business practice for the firm in Philadelphia.
The opportunity to rejoin Safeguard in June 2008 as its full time permanent Chief Financial Officer appealed to Steve's desire to further apply his strategic, financial and operating skills to a broad array of companies. Steve has raised more than $200 million of growth capital through both venture sources and public offerings for a number of businesses. The application of these skills along with the financial oversight responsibilities of Safeguard serve to significantly leverage Steve's substantial experiences for the benefit of Safeguard's shareholders and partner companies.
As Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Life Sciences, Jim applies his broad industry knowledge to drive Safeguard's partnership opportunities in Life Sciences. His significant experience as a marketing / sales and business development executive for leading pharmaceutical, medical device, diagnostics and software companies spans more than 20 years and covers assignments throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.
Prior to joining Safeguard, Jim was Chief Executive Officer of TouchPoint Solutions, Inc., a provider of software that enables customers to develop and deploy applications, content and media on multi-user interactive devices. Prior to TouchPoint, Jim served as Group President of Dendrite International, a provider of sales, marketing, clinical and compliance solution services to global pharmaceutical and other life sciences companies. In his tenure as Group Director of Corporate Business Strategy and Planning at GlaxoSmithKline, he served on the Global Predictive Medicine Board of Directors, evaluating acquisition and alliance opportunities, reengineering projects and facilitating change management teams. His experience also includes executive international assignments setting up international businesses and identifying strategic growth opportunities for Merck KGaA and Baxter.
As Chief Executive Officer at publicly traded Isuta Group, Jim redesigned the company's value proposition and led a profitable expansion throughout Asia and enabled the company's survival of the Asian economic crisis. These initiatives positioned the group to become a world leader in all major product groups.
Jim and his team actively oversee Safeguard's life sciences partner companies and continuously evaluate new growth opportunities in life sciences companies.
Jim believes that by providing capital, as well as a range of strategic, operational and management resources, Safeguard is uniquely positioned to build value in growth-stage life sciences companies. Jim has completed more than 20 acquisitions, mergers and divestitures in his 20 plus years of experience, and seeks opportunities to partner with innovative entrepreneurs within diagnostics, medical devices and specialty pharmaceuticals.
As a member of Safeguard's executive team, Kevin uses his market insight, business acumen and strategic vision to identify opportunities for Safeguard to partner with entrepreneurial companies in financial and fintech/payments, healthcare IT and Internet-based businesses.
Kevin evaluates new opportunities and provides strategic and operational leadership to Safeguard and its rapidly growing partner companies. With over 10 years of experience in supporting entrepreneurs through venture capital, consulting, M&A transactions and strategic planning, Kevin has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Safeguard partner companies.
Kevin has provided capital to and served in senior management positions with companies representing all stages of growth. Prior to joining Safeguard in June 2004, Kevin was a director with Kennet Venture Partners, where he sourced and managed software and technology-enabled services investments. He also served as a principal at Broadview International, where he co-led the firm's Silicon Valley team focused on mergers and acquisitions in the software applications market. Earlier in his career, he was a manager in Deloitte & Touche's Management Consulting practice and a software developer at Salomon Brothers.
Kevin received his MBA with a concentration in Entrepreneurial Management from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and his BE in
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Vanderbilt University.
Kevin has established himself as a leader in the technology industry, having recently been recognized with the Philadelphia Business Journal's '40 under 40' Award in 2008. Additionally, Kevin is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Capital (MAC) Alliance and the IT Investment Advisory Committee for the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania. He is also on the board of the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) and serves as co-chair for ACG Philadelphia's Program Committee. Additionally, he has served as a judge for the Eastern Technology Council's Enterprise Awards. Kevin is a founding member of MindShare Philadelphia, a forum designed for aspiring technology and life sciences CEOs to collaborate and learn from their peers. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for Safeguard's portfolio companies Advantedge Healthcare Solutions, Authentium and Bridgevine.
As Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Brian has executive responsibility for Safeguard's legal affairs, mergers & acquisitions, support of Safeguard's Board and public company activities, and direct participation in Safeguard's business strategy. He is also responsible for managing compensation programs, performance programs and other human resources activities at Safeguard.
Brian has more than 20 years of legal, operational, venture capital and public company experience in a high-tech setting, which further strengthens the depth of expertise and leadership within our organization. Safeguard is well positioned as a holding company to execute upon its game plan to deploy capital in new, high-potential situations, build value in our partner companies and realize that value in well-timed exits. Brian's extensive knowledge of relationship management, M&A and other strategic transactions will enable Safeguard to continue to produce genuine results and be innovative as we execute upon our strategy.
Brian comes to Safeguard from Traffic.com, a former Safeguard Partner Company and a leading provider of accurate, real-time traffic information in the United States, where he was Senior Vice President and General Counsel. Brian's legal, corporate finance, general management background and extensive public company experience proved invaluable to Traffic.com during the process of its acquisition by NAVTEQ Corporation (NYSE: NVT) earlier this year.
Previously, Brian was Chief Operating Officer of Halo Technology Holdings, a public holding company for enterprise software businesses. Prior to that, he was Managing Director at Katalyst LLC, a venture capital and consulting firm; General Counsel of National Media Corporation, a public multimedia company with operations in 70 countries; and was a Partner at Klehr, Harrison, Harvey, Branzburg & Ellers LLP, a full-service Philadelphia-based law firm.
Brian is a native of the greater Philadelphia region. He received a BS from Bucknell University and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
At Safeguard, John is responsible for developing, implementing and managing all aspects of the Company's business development, corporate communications, strategic investor relations and marketing communications programs.
John brings to Safeguard an extensive background in investor relations and a solid platform in communications. Over the course of his career, John has assisted national and multinational companies with corporate communications, initial public offerings (IPOs), mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, financial media relations, investor targeting, meeting programs and crisis management.
Prior to joining Safeguard, John served as Vice President of Investor Relations at The Reynolds and Reynolds Company, a billion dollar software and services company. He played a key role in leading US operations as a managing partner for National Public Relations, Inc., a full service investor relations and corporate communications consulting firm. Prior to that, John was Director of Investor Relations at Thomson Financial/Georgeson & Company. He began his career at Robert Marston Corporate Communications after graduating from Susquehanna University.
John is an active member of the National Investor Relations Institute.
